NEGROS POWER GETS CONGRESS’ APPROVAL: Ushering in a New Era of Electricity Distribution for Negros Occidental

Bacolod, Negros Occidental – February 14, 2024 – A new chapter unfolds for Negros Occidental’s power sector as Congress grants a franchise to Negros Electric and Power Corp. (NEPC). This monumental decision, passed on February 13 during the 2nd regular session of the 19th Congress, promises a brighter future for electricity distribution in the province.

Empowering NEPC to Serve Key Cities and Municipalities:

House Bill No. 9805, championed by Central Negros Occidental representatives, empowers Negros Power/NEPC to establish, operate, and maintain an electric power distribution system for the next 25 years. This franchise explicitly covers the cities of Bacolod, Silay, Talisay, and Bago, alongside the Murcia and Don Salvador Benedicto municipalities.

Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Continuity:

Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO) remains a vital player in this transition. Congressman Gus S. Tambunting, Chair of the Legislative and Franchises Committee, clarified that CENECO will retain a 30% ownership stake in NEPC. A Joint Venture Agreement also ensures all debts and financial obligations are settled responsibly.

Emphasizing employee welfare, Congressman Tambunting assured that retirement and separation fees from CENECO will be honored as per Collective Bargaining Agreements. NEPC will also prioritize CENECO employees when seeking new talent.

Fueling Growth and Progress:

This franchise transcends mere electricity distribution. It aims to guarantee a continuous and uninterrupted supply of power, directly impacting residents’ lives and businesses. By meeting the evolving energy demands of the region, NEPC fuels economic growth and progress, paving the way for a brighter future.

Negros Power Looking Beyond the Horizon:

NEPC’s arrival marks a significant step towards:

  • Enhanced Quality of Service: Residents can expect improved electric distribution, potentially translating to fewer outages and more reliable power.
  • Economic Stimulation: A stable and accessible power supply attracts investments, fosters business growth, and creates job opportunities.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Reliable electricity empowers Filipinos in Negros Occidental, enabling them to pursue their aspirations and elevate their quality of life.

The Road Ahead:

While the franchise approval marks a momentous occasion, the journey has just begun. NEPC now faces the crucial task of implementing its plans, ensuring transparency, and earning the community’s trust. Open communication and active engagement with stakeholders will be key to success.

This franchise award paves the way for a new era in Negros Occidental’s power sector. With Negros Power/NEPC taking the helm, the future promises stable, reliable, and accessible electricity, propelling the province towards a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow.
