A brand new year is coming and along with the New Year is a whole new set of plans for those of us who love travel. A place that you shouldn’t miss out going to this year here in the Philippines is Bacolod city. Bacolod is slowly making its way to the list of many travelers across the world. And it should make yours too.
Bacolod Festivals:
If you are planning to visit Bacolod any time soon, try to plan your travel date along with either one of the two famous festivals that the city holds, the Masskara and Bacoloadiat Festival. By its name the Masskara festival is a festival filled with dancing, masks, music and headdresses. They also have pageants, carnivals, concerts and a lot more that you wouldn’t want to miss. The whole festival takes days and you are sure to enjoy every minute of it.

As for the Bacoloadiat festival, it is basically the way how Bacolodnons celebrate Chinese New Year. The influence of Chinese is evident in the country, and stronger in some cities, which is why the locals of Bacolod really have a grand celebration during Chinese New Year. The festival follows a certain theme every year and have events such as lantern competition, cooking demos, fireworks show, and many others. Similar to the Masskara festival, the whole festival also s celebrated a couple of days, so try to plan your travel to Bacolod around this time.
Bacolod Pasalubong Treats:
As soon as the festival ends and you’ve traveled around Bacolod, it feels like the fun ends. However, this isn’t the cause. When it comes to visiting new places, a tradition that every Filipino knows is that you cannot go back home without buying pasalubong for you or your family/friends. This is our way or how we share the experience to our family and friends, and how we try to prolong the experience we just had. Pasalubong come in many different forms. Typically, they are small keychains, postcards, fans, t-shirts, magnets, and such.
However, our favorite and go-to choice is usually food. Everybody loves food. We can never go wrong with bringing home food to our family and friends to a place where we went to. What makes food a good pasalubong is that every province, or even city, has their own specialty; a dish that is native or is made in a specific way only in that place. This makes it a unique and even more enjoyable pasalubong.
Choosing the pasalubong you should bring home from Bacolod may be a difficult choice given that the city is known to be the Sugar Capital of the country. But there are some top choices you should never miss out on. These are the staple sweets that should be inside your bag when you go home. All these are easily sharable treats that can be enjoyed by many. And you can find the basic and most unique Pasalubong treats at Merzci’s Pasalubong center.

It is an easy meal to bring anywhere, making it a great snack whenever you travel back home. Just make sure to leave some for your family.

Great for breakfast and afternoon snacks

This is the most popular delicacy throughout Bacolod City; Piaya is crunchy bread/flat bread that has been stuffed with muscovado-based syrup (How delicious does that sound?) A deceiving delicacy is Bacolod, how is Barquillos deceiving? It may look like a plain and simple rolled wafer stick snack but its crunch and taste can definitely shock you which is why many actually use it as toppers for other desserts such as ice cream, some even use it on cake.

5] Merzci Barquiron
Barquillos is a classic and scrumptious delicacy, and Barquiron puts a twist on this delicacy. Barquiron is barquillos/crunchy wafer roll filled with the undeniably tasty polvoron. So in other words, Barquiron is like a 2-in-1. You get the crunchy with the sort of smooth texture at the same time.
