There is so much to be said about New Orleans and you’re probably already aware of most. Generally, you can’t talk about New Orleans without mentioning either Mardi Gras, the Mississippi River, or beignets.

Let’s talk about some of the best weekend activities for you and your family to enjoy once you make the big move.

New Orleans - Mississippi River

New Orleans Scenic Walk

There is so much history around every corner in New Orleans. If you take a trip to the French Quarter District you can see examples of French and Spanish Creole architecture. These are the famous buildings you frequently associate with New Orleans architecture. These buildings were built during the reign of the Ursuline Convent in the late 1700s. Nuns from Norway came to the area to run a convent, hospital, and girls’ school.

In addition, there are many other styles of homes that are popular in New Orleans such as Victorian, Queen Anne, antebellum, and bungalow. Many properties have intricate iron fences and gardens that represent the multicultural history of Louisiana. Notably one of the largest and busiest ports, New Orleans has been home to many people from around the world.

As you’re taking your walk through the city, you’ll notice that there are signature cafes, boutiques, and small businesses. This city prides itself on its acceptance of all cultures and is home to large LGBTQ+ communities. The backgrounds of all walks of life can be found in the cuisine, murals on the streets, and their creative music scene.

New Orleans Night Out

We’ve only scratched the surface so far on New Orleans cuisine. To begin, this city is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Over 18 million people visited the city in 2018. That’s a lot of people looking for the best southern food or specialty food they’ve ever tasted. Many people travel to this area to explore the local restaurants and other food vendors.

New Orleans - Canal Street

Much of the food in New Orleans has hints of French, Spanish, and Italian roots. Outside of the very famous beignets, this area is famous for jambalaya, crawfish, and Yaka Mein. Many of the food vendors categorize their eatery as street food, which caters to the bar crowd and night owls. You better be a foodie if you’re looking at New Orleans houses for sale.

The best place to visit a nightclub is going to be on Canal Street. This street is famous during Mardi Gras but New Orleans is really about the party even outside of Mardi Gras. As the birthplace of jazz, this southern city is known for getting down when it gets dark. There is fun for every adult from casinos to burlesque shows. The party doesn’t stop!

Get Spooky

One of the most popular attractions of New Orleans is the mystical side. This area is well known for different types of beliefs, especially those that stemmed from the black community. Voodoo, Hoodoo, and Afro-Creole were all prominent in the 1720s Louisianna slave culture. Many of the spiritual beliefs of the city are syncretized and are really what we think of when it comes to the “spooky” business.

As a city that is a host to dozens of bar crawls, walking tours, and historic tours, you can bet there are going to be some spooky ones that are offered all year round! New Orleans Ghost Adventures hosts a haunted pub crawl. There’s also the Voodoo and Vampire Tour hosted by Witches Brew Tours. With so much history, you know that some of these places are definitely haunted.

Even if the scary and spooky isn’t your style, New Orleans is a beautiful place to live. There is so much cultural diversity in the city that anyone can feel comfortable there. There are always festivals and events to draw in the tourists so you’ll never be bored. A weekend visit can provide a look at what New Orleans living has to offer you and your family.
