Negros Power aids NONECO Amid Blackout in Northern Negros
Blackout Hits Northern Negros
On October 15, more than 30,000 residents of Northern Negros, particularly in the towns of EB Magalona, Manapla, and Victorias City, faced an unexpected power outage. The blackout occurred due to the failure of Northern Negros Electric Cooperative’s (NONECO) 12.5 MegaVolt Amperes (MVA) power transformer at the Victorias substation, leaving households and businesses in total darkness.
NONECO Requests Help from Negros Power
As the blackout extended into critical areas, NONECO immediately sought assistance. They requested a temporary 2 MegaWatt (MW) power supply from Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) to bridge the gap while repairs were underway. With the transformer down, NONECO needed external help to quickly restore electricity to its customers.
Negros Power Steps Up to the Challenge
Negros Power responded swiftly to NONECO’s request. After evaluating the situation, the company stepped in to help by connecting Feeder 3 from their Lopez substation to NONECO’s feeders in Barangay San Jose, EB Magalona. This connection restored temporary power to many of the affected residents.
In a statement, Roel Castro, President and CEO of Negros Power, expressed their commitment to assist NONECO during this challenging period. He said:
“We understand the difficulties faced by our fellow industry player and neighbor, NONECO, and their consumers during this challenging time. We didn’t hesitate to extend our support by providing them with 2 megawatts of temporary supply from our Lopez and Panaogao substations. We hope this will alleviate the inconvenience they are experiencing. Our assistance will continue until NONECO fully restores operations at their Victorias Substation.”
Will Negros Power Consumers Be Affected?
With Negros Power stepping in to supply NONECO, some consumers of Negros Power might wonder whether this will affect their own electricity supply. Castro was quick to reassure them, stating:
“Negros Power consumers should rest assured that this will not affect our load capacity. We have sufficient load to meet the demand within our franchise area. However, we will closely monitor our substations to ensure a continuous and reliable power supply.”
This statement was meant to ease any concerns and ensure that Negros Power’s consumers know they will not experience any power interruptions due to the assistance being provided to NONECO.
The Path to Recovery for NONECO
While the temporary supply from Negros Power has helped mitigate the immediate impact of the blackout, NONECO still faces a long road to full recovery. Repairing or replacing a 12.5 MVA transformer is a complicated task that requires significant time and resources.
For now, the temporary solution from Negros Power will keep the lights on in the affected areas. However, NONECO’s complete restoration of its Victorias substation remains a priority, and its timeline still needs to be determined.
Collaboration in Times of Crisis
This situation highlights the importance of collaboration within the energy sector, especially when one provider experiences a critical issue like a transformer failure. The quick response from Negros Power demonstrates the strength of industry partnerships and the vital role they play in maintaining reliable electricity supply across neighboring areas.
Roel Castro emphasized that this cooperation is essential, saying, “Our assistance will continue until NONECO fully restores operations at their Victorias Substation.”
A Temporary Fix, but a Long-Term Commitment
For the residents and businesses affected by the blackout, the immediate help from Negros Power has provided much-needed relief. This temporary supply ensures that power continues to flow while NONECO works to resolve the issue at the Victorias substation.
Negros Power’s swift and efficient response reflects their strong commitment to both their own consumers and their neighboring communities. By stepping in when NONECO needed help, they’ve proven that reliability and cooperation go hand in hand.
As the repairs at NONECO move forward, the support from Negros Power will remain crucial in keeping power flowing for the residents of EB Magalona, Manapla, and Victorias City. The partnership between the two energy providers serves as a reminder of the importance of stepping up to assist others when they’re in need.
Conclusion: Working Together to Keep the Lights On
The blackout in Northern Negros underscores just how critical a reliable power supply is to the daily lives of residents and businesses. Thankfully, with Negros Power stepping in, the affected communities were able to get back on their feet while NONECO worked through the technical challenges at their substation.
The continued collaboration between Negros Power and NONECO reflects the spirit of teamwork and mutual support that’s essential in times of crisis. As the situation progresses, residents can rest assured that the lights will stay on, thanks to the efforts of both companies.
Negros Power’s commitment to providing a steady supply of electricity, even while supporting NONECO, demonstrates that the energy sector is stronger when companies work together for the common good.
